Lesson Objectives

Students will analyze the oral histories of students who were a part of the Congress on Racial Equality during the civil rights movement.

 

Materials

Handout: Young Leaders of New Orleans—Introduction

Handout and Audio Clips: Young Leaders of New Orleans—Oral Histories

Worksheet: Examining Young Leaders of New Orleans

 

Procedures

Have the students do the lesson in small groups of two or four people.

1. Distribute “Young Leaders of New Orleans—Introduction.” Share read the text.

2. Listen to oral history clips here, then distribute “Young Leaders of New Orleans—Oral History Transcripts” to the class as a reference.  

3. Distribute the worksheet. Encourage students to work collaboratively and talk about the documents.

4. Reconvene as a class to discuss students’ answers to the worksheet.
