Louisiana Cycling Club Scrapbook

From 1887 to 1891 the members of the Louisiana Cycling Club kept a scrapbook detailing cycling culture in New Orleans. Its pages contain accounts of great races and cycle excursions; Carnival bike parades; and the ongoing conflict between wheelmen—cyclists—and inconsiderate horse-and-buggy drivers, better known as “road hogs.” It also chronicles the slow, sometimes patronizing, acceptance of women riders into the sport.
