The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Universal’s 1923 film version of Victor Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris, catapulted actor Lon Chaney into stardom and featured a built-to-scale façade of the famous cathedral. For the fifteenth Les Comédiens Français Lecture, THNOC will screen the silent film with live, improvised musical accompaniment by former St. Louis Cathedral young-artist-in-residence, pianist Karol Mossakowski. Born in Poland into a family of musicians, Mossakowski started studying the piano and the organ with his father at the age of three and went on to study at the Poznań Music Academy and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Winner of numerous international competitions, he has gained recognition for his improvised silent movie accompaniments. Recent appearances include the Quebec City Film Festival and at the Lumière Festival of Lyon.

The theater group Les Comédiens Français was organized in 1934 to promote, foster, and perpetuate the French language and culture in New Orleans. After presenting more than 50 years of stage productions, the organization disbanded and established the lecture series at THNOC.

Reservations must be paid in advance. Admission is $15, $5 for THNOC members, and free for Caillot Circle, Jackson Society, Laussat Society, and Bienville Circle members. Reservations can be made by calling (504) 523-4662.
