Pianist Pierre Queval will provide live, improvised accompaniment to the silent classic The Phantom of the Opera at a special screening presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection. Adapted from Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, the film stars Lon Chaney in the title role, as he haunts the Paris Opera House. The 1925 classic is noted for its technical accomplishment, with critic Roger Ebert saying, “It creates beneath the opera one of the most grotesque places in the cinema, and Chaney’s performance transforms an absurd character into a haunting one.”

The French-born Queval graduated from the Paris Conservatory and regularly performs the piano and organ at churches throughout France. In 2016 he was the young-artist-in-residence at the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. During his stay he wowed audiences with his live score of the silent film Wings (1927), presented at THNOC in conjunction with the exhibition At Home and At War.

The screening is presented as part of THNOC’s Les Comédiens Français lecture series, which is dedicated to French language and culture in the performing arts. The film screening will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is $15 for the general public, $5 for Founder and Merieult members, and free for Caillot Circle, Mahalia, Jackson, Laussat Society, and Bienville Circle members. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling (504) 598-7146. Not a THNOC member? Join online today and receive benefits throughout the year.
