In collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C., and the Consulate of Sweden in New Orleans, The Historic New Orleans Collection will present a recital celebrating famed Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind (1820–1887). Commemorating New Orleans’s tricentennial and the ties between the city and Sweden, the program will feature soprano Kine Sandtrø, who is the 2017 recipient of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music’s Jenny Lind Scholarship, and pianist Julia Sjöstedt, both of whom are traveling to New Orleans for this performance.

“Celebrating the Swedish Nightingale” will feature music performed by Lind, who visited New Orleans in 1851 to great acclaim. When she arrived by boat on February 7 she was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, and over the course of 13 concerts, the city’s residents became even more enamored of the performer.

The evening’s program will feature Nordic folk music and operatic arias by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Charles Gounod, Adolf Fredrik Lindblad, Edvard Grieg, and more. Admission is free to the event, which will take place Monday, June 18, 6–7:30 p.m., at 410 Chartres St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Click the "Register Now!" button above or call (504) 598-7146 to register. Any unclaimed seats will be released to the public five minutes prior to the start of the program.
