Against the backdrop of his exhibition Seeking and Open Life: Photographs of Lafcadio Hearn's Japan, Everett Kennedy Brown and THNOC’s John H. Lawrence will discuss Brown’s career in photography, photographic influences in the United States and Japan, technical and aesthetic philosophy, and a respect for tradition and history. Brown’s modern-day photographs using 19th-century techniques transport viewers to the Izumu District of Japan, home to New Orleans’s sister city of Matsue. Both cities were home to writer Lafcadio Hearn who conveyed the unique cultures of each area through his writing.

This is the first exhibition of Brown’s work outside of Japan, and this presentation will be the only chance to hear the artist’s perspective on his own work. The talk is presented during PhotoNOLA, an annual series of citywide programs that celebrate photography in New Orleans. Registration is encouraged, and admission is free. Register online or by calling (504) 598-7146.
