THNOC Intensive Workshop

Workshop Description

This workshop is intended for current educators at the secondary and post-secondary level. During this daylong program, participants will work one-on-one with THNOC staff to learn the basics of archival research methods and strategies for using primary sources in their classrooms. This workshop will be limited to four attendees.

After participating in this workshop, participants will be familiar with:

  • how to conduct archival research
  • how to conduct research at THNOC online and in person
  • how to access primary sources and primary source teaching tools from THNOC’s online catalog and website
  • creating primary source–based activities that help students engage in learning, develop critical thinking skills, and construct knowledge

Requirements

To successfully complete this program, the participant must:

  • be an active educator at the secondary or post-secondary level
  • be able to integrate the material and skills learned in this workshop into the classroom
  • demonstrate interest in learning strategies for incorporating primary sources into instruction
  • provide own wireless-enabled laptop or tablet for the workshop
  • commit to attend the full duration of the workshop (9 a.m.–4:30 p.m.)
  • create and submit a primary source activity based on source(s) found at THNOC after the conclusion of the workshop

There is no charge to attend this workshop. The Historic New Orleans Collection will provide breakfast, lunch, and all workshop materials. Parking will not be provided, but participants will be given a small stipend at the end of the workshop to cover local transportation costs. Participants will be given a certificate at the end of the day that confirms their completion of 7.5 hours of professional development.

Discussion about creating curriculum/primary sources

10:15 a.m.–11 a.m. 

Introduction to THNOC’s online catalog and the Reading Room

11 a.m.–noon

Browsing of online catalog and selection of archival items

noon–1 p.m. 

Lunch

1 p.m.–3:30 p.m.

Research and work in the Reading Room

3:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m. 

Reconvene for discussion of research and proposed primary source activities

Post-Workshop

After the conclusion of the workshop, participants will complete and submit a primary source activity based on one or more primary sources from THNOC’s holdings.
