Vieux Carré Commission Evaluation:

Old rating: orange; new rating: yellow. Le Richelieu Hotel complex occupies this large, four-story building which was constructed in 1902 by J. Cusimano for use as a macaroni factory. This old factory, however, was redone stylistically and enlarged by architect Leonard Spangenberg for hotel usage, at which time the mansard roof was added and the building redone in the "French Quarter style" (French doors and third floor balconies added). In the 19th century this was the site of the gardens for the Forstall House, which was situated on Barracks Street and later housed the St. Aloysius School.
