"The French and Indian War" • A lecture by Dr. Fred Anderson
presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection in partnership with the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Louisiana and the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Louisiana

Professor of history at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Dr. Anderson is the author or editor of five books, including Crucible of War: The Seven Years’ War and the Fate of Empire in British North America, 1754–1766 (2000), which won the 2001 Francis Parkman Prize as best book in American history. His newest book, The War That Made America: A Short History of the French and Indian War (2005), is the companion volume for the PBS television series of the same name. In addition to presenting the evening lecture at The Collection, Dr. Anderson will offer a teachers’ workshop and a program for students. The Collection continues its spring series of concerts and cocktails with the Washboard Chaz Trio. Though comfortable in all forms of our diverse American musical heritage, Washboard Chaz Leary has achieved dominance and international recognition in acoustic country blues. Chaz has shared the stage with Bonnie Raitt, John Hammond, Taj Mahal, Anders Osborne, and Corey Harris among others. He has opened for many blues greats, including Muddy Waters, Robert Cray, Doc Watson, and Keb Mo. This year’s program celebrates The Collection’s exhibition Surrounded by Water and the importance of preserving Louisiana’s wetlands. The day will feature music by the Lost Bayou Ramblers, live wetland creatures, arts and crafts projects, and demonstrations from the U.S. Coast Guard and National Park Service. Former riverboat captain Clarke “Doc” Hawley will lend his expertise in the exhibition, and Mark Twain will even make an appearance and share his tales of life on the river. The Estuarians of Save America’s Wetlands and Boudreaux D. Nutria from the New Orleans Zephyrs will make also be present.

The Collection concludes its spring series of concerts and cocktails with music by Vavavoom. Dixie Beer will be serving up a selection of beers. Vavavoom calls their music " a synthesis of New Orleans jazz and the French Gypsy tradition of Django Reinhardt, as well as what Jelly Roll Morton called, 'the Spanish tinge.'" Guitarists Raphaël Bas and Pierre Pichon have been playing together since high school in Bourges, France. Both emigrated to the US, independently of one another, over 10 years ago. Bart Ramsey (piano, accordion) has performed for audiences on three continents, several islands, and one isthmus. Nathan Lambertson (stand up bass) is a New Orleans native and has played with Alvin Batiste, Nicholas Payton, Ravi Coltrane, Trombone Shorty, Steve Masakowski, David Torkanowsky, and Jason Marsalis. This event requires registration. The registration fee is $25.00 until 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 9. After that point, participants may continue to register for a fee of $35.00, as space is available.

The Collection kicks off its fall series of concerts and cocktails with music by the Tremè Brass Band. Cocktails to be announced. The Tremè Brass Band plays the music of a people. The people in New Orleans who know how to celebrate life with a second line parade or mourn a person's death with a jazz funeral. The Tremè Brass Band represents the future of the New Orleans Brass Band Tradition. Although their music is steeped in the deep roots of New Orleans Jazz, this ensemble of young and old bring to it a fresh, exuberance which mixes elements of funk, soul, and modern jazz to the delight of all listeners.

Since moving to New Orleans in the early '90s, Andersson has wowed Big Easy crowds and critics with regularity, earning herself a cream-of-the-crop reputation and scores of accolades. Her eclectic brand of roots-informed rock that can segue from bluegrass hoe-downs into swirling, Sonic Youth-styled distortion jams, has garnered her Offbeat's Best of the Beat award for violin for six consecutive years and the 2003 Big Easy Award for Best Female Artist, as well as a regular slot at the city's famed New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
