During the second half of the 19th century, Louisiana was home to one of the largest Italian-born populations in the United States. While Italians immigrated to Louisiana throughout the 18th century, the major influx came between 1870 and 1920 when nearly 300,000 Italians, primarily Sicilians, entered the port of New Orleans.
Many Italian immigrants had fled poverty to find work on the docks of New Orleans and in the sugarcane fields of southern Louisiana. They adopted the French Quarter, operated grocery stores and bakeries, served the city in a wide variety of capacities, and shaped the Crescent City’s cultural landscape.
Italian roots run deep in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Enrico de Tonti, a French soldier born in the Kingdom of Naples, established the region’s first permanent European settlement, Poste aux Arkansas, in 1686. Tonti is remembered to this day as the father of Arkansas.
For ten days, The Collection will trace its Italian heritage through a uniquely designed tour that begins in Rome and travels the roads of Sicily. View the trip schedule.
